Outdoor Tea Ceremony Umbrella/Kurotani Washi/2.5 shaku
Nodate is the act of preparing and enjoying tea outdoors.
Nodate is a tea ceremony held outdoors.
It is not a formal tea ceremony that emphasizes the traditions held in the tea room,
This is a popular tea ceremony because you can enjoy tea while appreciating the beauty of nature.
It is often held in Japanese gardens and scenic parks.
Outdoor tea ceremonies began more than 500 years ago, during the conquest of Kyushu by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
It is said that it began when Sen no Rikyu, who accompanied him, made tea outdoors.
In the same year, the tea master Hechikan erected a vermilion umbrella to decorate the tea room.
This delighted Hideyoshi, who was hosting the tea ceremony, and from then on the nodate umbrella became an indispensable item at outdoor tea ceremonies.
As the Sengoku period ended and the Edo period began, outdoor tea ceremonies became more and more popular, and the demand for the crimson carpets and umbrellas that are indispensable for outdoor tea ceremonies increased.
Nowadays, umbrellas are widely used as decorations in teahouses at tourist spots, and continue to be used in outdoor tea ceremonies, such as those held at the Imperial Court.
