Suigyoku (Green) / Higasa_Specially selected Kurotani Washi
"Kyoto “Kurotani Washi” × Kyoto “Wagasa-ya Tsujikura
A traditional craft that has been protected and nurtured throughout its long history.
Kurotani Washi, a paper-making village in Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a very rare type of Japanese paper that is made one sheet at a time by craftsmen.
Because it is strong, long-lasting, and can withstand long-term storage, it is also used in the restoration of cultural properties.
The rare Kurotani Unryu paper is used to make special washi for Tsujikura’s Japanese umbrellas.
The washi craftsman said that it was very difficult to produce the specified color.
As Tsujikura hoped, Unryu paper was finally ready.
The skilled craftsmen took time to carefully finish it into a snake eyes umbrella.
From the raw materials to the finished product, the craftsmen insist on the real thing.
It is not only gorgeous. We hope you can feel the long story of how this umbrella was made.
Kurotani Washi “Byakko” – a superb product.
This is a Japanese parasol made of deep green Unryu paper, which has been left with the lines of Kozo paper during the papermaking process to give it a unique appearance.
◇ Each Unique Charm - Experience the Five Senses with Traditional Japanese Umbrellas
•The handle is crafted from black bamboo, providing a smooth texture that fits comfortably in your hand.
•When closed, the umbrella reveals the slender and elegant shape of the original single piece of bamboo.
•When held up to the light, the unryu-paper made from mulberry bark (kozo) becomes semi-transparent.
Note: Unryu-gami is a type of handmade paper where long fibers of torn mulberry bark are scattered across the base paper, creating cloud-like patterns.
•As the umbrella opens, the delicate parch of Japanese washi paper unfolding one by one can be heard.
•The stopper that controls the umbrella’s opening is made not of metal but of wood, featuring a traditional hajiki.
The satisfying click of the wooden stopper resonates pleasantly.
*Not a rain umbrella.
