"Openwork" Janome Umbrella
A new rain umbrella has been added to the "Japanese Parasol Openwork Leaf" series, which has been very popular with customers.
Washi paper is one of the main materials used to make Japanese umbrellas.
Many of Tsujikura's Japanese umbrellas are made using strong, durable, handmade Japanese paper.
The Japanese umbrellas in the "Openwork Leaf" series also use handmade washi paper.
This Japanese paper is made by collecting fallen leaves one by one according to the season and making them transparent during the papermaking process.
The washi paper made for umbrellas takes about six months to complete.
Not only is the handmade process delicate, but the resulting washi paper is also thick and durable.
To make a single Japanese umbrella, many craftsmen work together, making the framework, creating the parts called rokuro that connect the framework, and making the washi paper. Then, the craftsmen at Tsujikura finish it into a single Japanese umbrella.
As most of the work involved in making a Japanese umbrella is done by hand, it takes a long time to complete.
Tsujikura's Japanese umbrellas are made thanks to our connections with many people.
Seeing the completed umbrellas makes me feel grateful for this opportunity and I continue to work hard every day to make more umbrellas.
